GIF Optimizer
Make any animated GIF lighter and see exactly what you saved — free, with no watermark, right in your browser.
- Files never leave your device
- Transparency & loop kept
- No watermark, no sign-up
Drop a GIF here to optimize it
or paste it with Ctrl+V · up to 100 MB
Fewer frames keep the same total length: dropped frames hand their time to the ones that stay.
Always on: comments, extra color tables and unchanged pixels are stripped.

Lighter, not blurrier
Optimize a GIF and See Exactly What You Save
This GIF optimizer makes a GIF smaller by rebuilding its color table, trimming frames you don't need and stripping data nobody sees. Every setting comes with a one-line explanation, so you know what will change before you click.
When the work is done you get hard numbers, for example 1.33 MB → 511 KB, plus a slider to check that nothing went soft. It is a GIF optimizer online that never uploads your file: everything runs in your browser, so you can make a GIF smaller on a laptop or a phone.
How it works
How to Optimize a GIF in 3 Steps
-
1. Add your GIF
Drop a GIF onto the GIF optimizer above, tap Choose GIF, or paste one with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Files up to 100 MB work.
-
2. Choose your optimizations
The defaults already make most files lighter. Lower the colors, cap the frame rate or shrink the size when you need more.
-
3. Compare and download
Check the size saving, drag the slider across the preview to judge quality, then download the optimized file.
Every setting, explained
What Our GIF Optimizer Does
Each option in the GIF optimizer changes one thing. Here is what it touches and when it pays off.
Fewer colors
Builds one shared palette of 256, 128, 64 or 32 colors with median-cut quantization; fewer colors take up less space. Use it on almost every clip: 128 is the sweet spot, 64 or 32 suit cartoons and emoji.
Lower frame rate
Drops frames to reach 30, 20, 15 or 10 fps and gives their time to the frames that stay, so the clip runs just as long. Use it on screen recordings and video clips captured at high frame rates.
Duplicate frames merged
Joins frames that are pixel-for-pixel identical into one longer frame. Nothing looks different; the file simply carries less. Use it on animations with pauses or held poses.
Smaller dimensions
Scales every frame by a percentage or to a maximum side. Halving the width leaves a quarter of the pixels. Use it when the animation is bigger than the space it will be shown in.
Speed (optional)
Scales every frame delay to speed playback up or slow it down. Left at 1×, the original timing stays untouched, frame by frame.
Clean-up, always on
Removes comments, application data and repeated color tables, and stores only the pixels that change between frames.
Before & After
Before & After: Size and Quality, Side by Side
Numbers alone don't tell you whether a clip still looks right, so you get both.
The size saving, in plain numbers
After each run the GIF optimizer shows the original and new file size and the percentage saved, along with the frame count, dimensions and running time before and after. Change a setting and run it again to see how much each step is worth.
Quality is your call
The comparison slider lays the optimized animation over the original. Drag it across faces, text and gradients, where banding shows first. If something looks off, step back to more colors or a higher frame rate. Nothing is saved until you press Download.
Why it's different
Why Use Our GIF Optimizer
Processed locally, never uploaded
The work runs inside your browser, so the file stays on your device from start to finish.
Transparent backgrounds kept
Transparent pixels stay transparent, and resized edges are blended with premultiplied alpha, so stickers keep clean outlines on any background.
Loop count kept
The loop setting is copied as-is: forever stays forever, and play-once stays play-once.
No watermark
The optimized file holds only your animation: no logo, no caption, no end card.
Free, no sign-up
Use the GIF optimizer as often as you like, with no account, no daily limit and no upsell.
Works on phones
Large files are handled in a background thread, and the GIF optimizer runs in Safari and Chrome on mobile.
Ideas
What You Can Do with an Optimized GIF
Optimize GIF files before they go out: a lighter file loads faster, uploads first time and fits where heavy ones are turned away.
Discord emoji
Animated emoji must stay under 256 KB. Fewer colors and a lower frame rate usually bring a 128 × 128 reaction under the cap without a visible change. Crop it to a square with the GIF Cropper first.
Faster websites
A lighter animation appears sooner, especially on phones, and helps keep page-speed scores in the green. Size it to the space it actually fills on the page.
Email newsletters
Heavy images make emails slow to open. A 600-pixel-wide animation with 64 to 128 colors keeps a newsletter quick on mobile data.
Social posts
Smaller files upload faster to X, Reddit and Tumblr, and are less likely to be squeezed again by the platform into something smeary.
Sticker packs
In a set of animated stickers every file adds up. Run them all with the same color count and frame rate so the pack looks consistent and stays light enough to share.
FAQ
GIF Optimizer FAQ
Quick answers about making GIFs lighter. Didn't find yours? Email support@gifcropper.com.
How do I optimize a GIF?
Drop it into the GIF optimizer at the top of this page, keep the defaults or adjust colors, frame rate and size, then click Optimize GIF. You see the new file size and a before-and-after slider before you download.
How do I make a GIF smaller without losing quality?
Start with the steps that don't touch the picture: the automatic clean-up and merging duplicate frames. Then try 128 colors, which most clips survive without a visible change. Reach for a lower frame rate or smaller size only if you still need a lighter file.
Does optimizing a GIF reduce its quality?
Only as much as you choose. Fewer colors, fewer frames and smaller dimensions each trade a little quality for a lighter file, and the slider shows exactly what changed. At 256 colors with the original frame rate and size, the picture stays as close to the original as the format allows.
Does the optimizer keep transparent backgrounds?
Yes. Transparent pixels stay transparent, and when you shrink a file the edges are blended with premultiplied alpha, so stickers and emoji don't get dark or white fringes.
Will the loop count be kept?
Yes. An animation that loops forever keeps looping forever, and one set to play once or twice keeps that setting exactly.
Can I optimize a GIF for Discord?
Yes. Emoji need 128 × 128 pixels and less than 256 KB, so crop the clip to a square with the GIF Cropper first, then bring it here and try 64 colors and 15 fps if it is still too heavy.
Is it free and watermark-free?
Yes. The GIF optimizer adds no watermark, needs no sign-up and has no limit on how many files you run through it.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device and nobody else can see it.
Can I optimize a GIF on my phone?
Yes. It runs in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Big files are processed in the background, so the page stays responsive while you wait.
Why is my optimized GIF bigger than the original?
Some files have already been squeezed hard by another tool. If the result comes out bigger, try 64 colors, a lower frame rate or a smaller size, or simply keep your original.
