Extract Frames From a GIF in Your Browser

This GIF to frames tool reads your animation on your own device and saves each picture as a separate PNG. Nothing is uploaded; all the work runs in a background worker inside the page. PNG is lossless, so a frame exported at 100% has exactly the pixels you see when the GIF plays. Each frame's delay is kept in a list, so you can rebuild the animation at its original speed.

How to Extract GIF Frames

  1. 1. Upload your GIF

Drag a GIF onto the upload area, choose it from your device, or paste it with Ctrl+V. The page shows the frame count, size, loop setting and average interval, plus a thumbnail of every frame.

  2. 2. Pick the frames you need

All frames start selected. Enter a From and To frame for a range, tick single frames, or use Select all and Invert selection.

  3. 3. Download one PNG or the whole ZIP

Save one frame with the PNG button on its thumbnail, or download your selection as a ZIP. You can cancel while it packs, and the result shows the frame count, PNG total and ZIP size.

What You Get in the Export

File names and numbering

ZIP files are numbered in order from frame-001.png, so frames 12 to 20 become frame-001.png to frame-009.png. A single download keeps its own number, such as frame-017.png.

frames.txt, the delay list

Each ZIP includes frames.txt: every file name with its delay in milliseconds and its original frame number, plus the source size and loop setting.

Optional scaling

Frames keep the original pixels by default. The 75% and 50% options use nearest-neighbour sampling, which keeps edges crisp and adds no blended colors.

PNG vs BMP and JPEG

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. BMP is lossless too but far larger. JPEG drops transparency and blurs the flat colors and sharp edges GIFs are made of.

Why the ZIP is stored, not compressed

PNG data is already compressed, so compressing it again saves almost nothing. The ZIP stores the files as they are, packs quickly and opens in any unzip tool.

GIF Frames, Delays and Loop Count Explained

For anyone rebuilding the animation.

Every frame has its own delay

A GIF can hold one frame or thousands, each with its own delay in hundredths of a second, so values are multiples of 10 ms. There is no fixed frame rate: a file can run at 40 ms per frame, then hold one frame for two seconds.

Very short delays play slower

Chrome, Firefox and other major browsers play a delay of 10 ms or less at about 100 ms, a rule kept for old files. 20 ms is the shortest delay that plays as stored. If frames.txt shows 0 or 10 ms, choose between the stored value and the speed viewers actually saw.

The loop count lives in the file header

Whether a GIF plays once, a few times or forever is stored near the start of the file, not in any frame. PNG has no place for it, so after extraction it survives only in frames.txt.

Partial frames are rebuilt into full pictures

Many optimized GIFs store only the rectangle that changed and leave the rest transparent. Saving that patch alone would give you a fragment, so each frame is first drawn onto the full canvas with the GIF's disposal rules applied. Such frames show “patch” under the thumbnail.

Common Uses for Extracted GIF Frames

Sprite sheets and CSS frame animation

Lay the PNGs in a row as a sprite sheet and step through it with CSS steps() or a canvas loop, using frames.txt for the timing.

A cover image or thumbnail

Pick the frame that tells the story and use it as a poster or preview image.

Sticker and meme material

Take one expression and edit it as a still: add a caption or cut out the background. For moving words, you can animate a line of text from scratch.

GIF to Frames vs Other Conversions

Nearby jobs need other tools.

Still images from every frame

That is this page: one complete PNG per frame, with delays listed. It does not turn frames back into a video or make animated WebP.

Several images in one layout

To place GIFs or images side by side or in a grid inside one animation, combine them on one canvas. It does not play frames in sequence.

A shorter clip, still a GIF

To keep a section as a GIF rather than loose images, cut the GIF down to the part you need; delays and loop count stay.

A different size, still animated

Resize every frame of the GIF to change its dimensions, or crop the GIF to the area you want.

GIF to Frames FAQ

Quality, file sizes and privacy.

Does it keep the original image quality?

Yes. At 100% each PNG has exactly the pixels of the rebuilt frame, transparent areas included. Only the optional 75% and 50% scales change the image, dropping pixels without blending new colors.

Can I download just one frame?

Yes. Every thumbnail has a PNG button, always visible on touch screens. The file keeps its original number, such as frame-017.png, and uses the chosen scale.

Where is the frame delay stored?

PNG has no delay field, so timing goes into frames.txt in the ZIP, next to each file name and original frame number. Delays also appear under each thumbnail.

Why are some frames bigger than others?

PNG compresses each picture on its own, so detailed frames take more bytes. The total can exceed the GIF, because the GIF often stores only changed areas while each PNG is a full picture.

Can I extract frames from a big GIF?

Yes, up to 100 MB and 4096 pixels per side. The grid draws only what is on screen. A ZIP holds up to 65,535 files and 4 GB; on slower devices, pick a range or a smaller scale.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes, in a current mobile browser. Tap PNG on a thumbnail or download the ZIP; the Files app on iPhone and most Android file managers can open it.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. GIF to frames conversion happens in a background worker on your device. Frames and the ZIP are created locally and saved to your downloads, with no account and no watermark.

What if I only need a sprite sheet?

This tool saves separate PNGs, not one sheet. Drop the frames into a sprite sheet packer or image editor; the numbered names keep them in order, and frames.txt gives the timing.
